Yangyang: Temple, Surfing & K-Beach Culture
From a cliffside Buddhist sanctuary to Korea's hottest surf beach in one day
Yangyang is Korea's answer to Ibiza β a young, dynamic coastal city where surfers from around the world converge on pristine East Sea beaches. This signature one-day course pairs Naksansa Temple's 1,300-year-old clifftop serenity with the barefoot, sun-soaked energy of Surfyy Beach, ending with craft burgers and live music along Yangnidan-gil.
Highlights
- Naksansa Temple: dramatic ocean views from a UNESCO-listed clifftop complex
- Fresh seafood lunch at a local harbour
- Surfyy Beach: Korea's #1 surf beach with bamboo bars and iconic photo zones
- Optional surf lesson (beginner-friendly, multilingual instructors)
- Yangnidan-gil: Yangyang's hip beachside bar and club district
Travel tip: A rental car is strongly recommended β bus connections between Naksansa, Surfyy Beach, and Osaek are infrequent. SeoulβYangyang surf shuttle buses (e.g. Grip Bus) are a good alternative if you're not driving.
Naksansa Temple
β± 1.5hA 1,300-year-old Buddhist temple perched dramatically on a cliff above the East Sea β one of Korea's most iconic coastal religious sites. The 16-metre Haesugwaneumsang (bronze Goddess of Mercy statue) gazes out to sea, while the Uisangdae Pavilion on its rocky headland offers some of the most breathtaking ocean panoramas in the country. Especially beautiful at sunrise.
Mulchi Harbour Seafood Lunch
β± 1.0hThe small working harbour right below Naksansa is lined with local restaurants specialising in seop-guk (wild mussel soup) and jjaebokttang (clam soup) β the classic East Coast meal. Pick your own live seafood from the tanks and have it prepared as sashimi or grilled. The ocean views from the harbour restaurant decks are superb.
Surfyy Beach
β± 2.0hKorea's #1 surf destination and Yangyang's most iconic hangout β the country's first dedicated surf beach. Bamboo beach bars serve mojitos and craft beer, hammocks and bean bags line the sand, and the yellow signature photo zones are unmistakable. Even non-surfers love the laid-back Bali-meets-East-Sea atmosphere. Surfboard rentals and beginner lessons available on-site.
Surf Lesson at Ingu Beach
β± 2.0hIngu Beach is Yangyang's most active surf spot β home to dozens of surf schools with English, Japanese, and Chinese-speaking instructors. A standard 2-hour beginner lesson covers basics on the sand then moves into the water; most first-timers stand up by the end. The beach's gentle, consistent waves make it ideal for learners.
Yangnidan-gil (Evening)
β± 2.5hYangyang's answer to Seoul's Gyeongnidan-gil β the beachside strip of Ingu and Jukdo beaches that comes fully alive after dark. Craft burger joints, surf-themed pubs, open-air BBQ spots, and clubs pump music into the night air. In summer, beach bonfires and impromptu bar parties spill onto the sand. A true K-beach nightlife experience unlike anything in Seoul.
