Gangnam: Skyline Tower, Lakeside & Lotte World
Olympic sculptures in the morning, Korea's tallest skyscraper at sunset, theme park thrills in between
A completely different side of Gangnam β the Jamsil district, where Seoul's most iconic tower pierces the skyline, a cherry-blossom lake sits beside a world-famous theme park, and one of Asia's largest outdoor sculpture parks stretches across an ancient Baekje earthwork fortress.
This course swaps K-pop cafΓ©s and designer boutiques for sweeping skyline views, lakeside strolls, and Lotte World's blend of fantasy and spectacle β finishing 555 metres above the city as the sun sets over Seoul.
Highlights
- Olympic Park & SOMA Museum β 200+ outdoor sculptures on a vast green park built over a 2,000-year-old earthen fortress
- Seokchon Lake β a twin-lake urban oasis, Seoul's top cherry-blossom spot in spring
- Lotte World Adventure β Korea's most beloved theme park with indoor and outdoor sections
- Lotte World Tower Sky 118 β Korea's tallest building (555m); glass-floor observation deck with all of Seoul laid out beneath your feet
Getting there: Jamsil Station (Line 2 / Line 8) is steps from Lotte World and Seokchon Lake. Olympic Park is 10 minutes by subway (Mongchon Toseong Station, Line 8).
Olympic Park & SOMA Museum
β± 1.5hBuilt for the 1988 Seoul Olympics, this vast green park is one of the city's best-kept secrets for foreign visitors. Over 200 sculptures by international artists are scattered across rolling lawns atop the ancient Mongchon earthen fortress β a 2,000-year-old Baekje-era structure you can still walk. The SOMA Museum hosts rotating contemporary art exhibitions. Peaceful, spacious, and almost entirely local on weekday mornings.
Seokchon Lake
β± 1.0hSeoul's most beloved urban lake β two connected artificial lakes encircled by a 2.5 km walking path, with Lotte World Tower rising dramatically on one side and weeping cherry trees lining the banks. Spring (late Marchβearly April) transforms the entire lakeside into a tunnel of pink blossom. Year-round, cafΓ© barges float on the water and locals jog the loop at all hours.
Jamsil Lunch (Korean Knife Noodles or Sundae Gukbap)
β± 1.0hThe streets around Jamsil Station are packed with unpretentious local eateries β hand-cut knife noodles (kalguksu) in rich anchovy broth, sundae gukbap (blood sausage rice soup), and tteokbokki. This is eating-like-a-local territory: plastic trays, low prices, huge portions, and no tourists. A complete contrast to Gangnam's upscale dining and a truer window into everyday Seoul food culture.
Lotte World Adventure
β± 2.5hKorea's most visited theme park and one of the world's largest indoor theme parks β a fairy-tale castle at the centre of a vast indoor atrium, surrounded by rides, shows, parades, and an outdoor section called Magic Island floating on Seokchon Lake. Even if you skip the rides, the spectacle of the space itself and the parade atmosphere are worth experiencing. Especially magical after dark with the castle lit up.
Lotte World Tower Seoul Sky Observatory
β± 1.5hKorea's tallest building at 555 metres β the fifth-tallest tower in the world. The Seoul Sky observation deck spans floors 117β123: a glass-floored outer terrace where you stand over the city, an open-air sky terrace at 500m, and a sky bridge connecting the floors. At sunset, the Han River reflects orange below while the entire metropolitan area of 25 million people stretches to every horizon. Booking in advance is strongly recommended.
